EQUIPPING FOR THE JOURNEY

The enjoyment and success of any journey lies in direct proportion to the preparation spent planning for it.  When Tom and I travel to a new destination, we spend hours studying the local attractions, tourist traps to avoid, and even the restaurants noted for the local cuisine.

Marriage is a journey, too, but how many of us equip ourselves beforehand for all that we will encounter? Maybe you're experiencing mediocrity and missing out on all the attractions that God has provided within marriage.  Has your marriage become ensnared in the trap of sin and despair and you need a tow truck to get you out of a ditch? No matter where you find yourself on the marriage map, you need the compass of God's word to safely guide you to a beautiful destination.

If we rely on our own instincts and thinking, rather than on the compass of God's word to direct us, we'll end up wandering in circles or landing in a ditch!  Have you ever been lost and confused about which direction to head when driving in an unfamiliar city? When we trust our instincts rather than a map, we might never reach our destination.  Satan--the number one enemy of marriage--deceives our thinking with his lies about how to achieve personal fulfillment in marriage.  If we trust these thoughts, we will never reach our destination.  The only way to combat a lie is with the truth.  God's word is the truth we need for success!
 
You might be wondering how I know this.  I know because I've tried it both ways--my own and God's--and only God's way works.  I still encounter unfamiliar terrain in my marriage and when I do, I run to the word because it has never failed me.  Deuteronomy 31:8 says, "Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord is the one who goes before you.  He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor forsake you." 

God's word will get you where you want to go.  Don't leave home without it!
